King Charles’ new holiday tradition linked to Queen Elizabeth

The Windsors are gearing up for a packed house at the Sandringham Estate this year, with Prince William recently revealing that in total 45 family members will participate in the “noisy” festivities. With some notable exceptions – Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, as well as their daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are reportedly staying awayas well as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – almost the entire royal company will meet on the royal family’s holiday in the country. And according to PeopleKing Charles is reportedly adding a new holiday tradition with ties to the late Queen Elizabeth to accommodate the crowd.

The royals will continue some long-standing Christmas customs, including exchanging gag gifts on Christmas Eve and walking in procession to Sandringham House for St. Mary Magdalene Church on Christmas Day before enjoying a post-service meal back at the house. However, sources say so People that this year Charles decided to change the location of the traditional Christmas lunch he holds about a week before the Christmas holidays.

Last year he hosted the annual private family lunch on December 20 at Windsor Castle with guests including Prince Andrew, Princess Anne, Princess Eugenie, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips. But with more of those guests coming to Norfolk this year, the monarch has reportedly decided to host the lunch at Buckingham Palace instead for the first time during his reign.

It’s unclear why Charles decided to move the lunch to London instead of holding it in Windsor as usual, but his decision is a sweet nod to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth. The late monarch traditionally hosted over 50 people in London for the lunch, many of whom were extended family members, before heading to Norfolk for a holiday.

The London location may be a little less convenient for the Wales family as Kate Middleton, Prince William and their children are located just minutes from Windsor Castle at Adelaide College. However, it is possible that the larger than usual guest list may have something to do with it. There is also a possibility that Charles could invite family members to the London lunch who will not be attending the Sandringham portion, such as Prince Andrew and his family, who are reportedly bowing out of this year’s festivities in light of a new political scandal.

The BBC’s royal correspondent Jennie Bond recently revealed that the royal family is embracing a bigger crowd this season after a tough year with Kate and Charles’ health struggles.

Kate’s parents are expected to attend this year’s celebrations and Camilla’s son Tom Parker Bowles will also make his Sandringham debut. Bond added: “I am sure this will be a Christmas where the whole family will unite around Charles and Camilla and William and Catherine, to help put this year behind them and cheer them into a brighter year ahead. “
