Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, More ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Stars Reunite for Revival Series

The Wilkerson family is returning to TV!

Frankie Muniz is reuniting her sitcom parents Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek for a four-episode limited revival of Malcolm in the middle on Disney+, the streamer announced on Friday, December 13.

Muniz, 39, also shared one video with him, Cranston and Kaczmarek to celebrate the news.

“I’ve been waiting for this moment for 18 years,” he said. “Let’s find out where Malcolm and his family are now.”

“25 years since we premiered Malcolm in the middle. I’m so excited… I might have just peed a little bit,” Cranston, 68, joked, and Kaczmarek, 68, added, “What a pleasure I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very, very excited to get back together and see what this family has been up to.”

The revival — written and executive produced by Linwood Boomer, who created the original series — will follow Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter as they are “drawn into family chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his attendance at their 40th wedding anniversary party,” according to a press release.

A premiere date and additional casting have not yet been announced.

Malcolm in the middle – starring Muniz as the title character – ran for seven seasons from 2000 to 2006. The series followed the lives of the Wilkersons, a dysfunctional family of six that includes different personality types such as a studious son, an overbearing mother, an immature father and a troublesome brother.

In addition to Muniz, Cranston and Kaczmarek, the comedy also starred Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield and Erik Per Sullivan.

Malcolm in the middle is a landmark sitcom that captured the essence of family life with humor, heart and relatability,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, in a statement. “The funny and heartfelt portrayal of a lovably chaotic family resonated with audiences of all ages, and we’re so excited to welcome back the original cast to bring that magic back to life. With Linwood Boomer and the creative team at the helm these new episodes will have all the laughs, pranks and mayhem that fans loved – along with a few surprises that remind us why this show is so timeless.”

Malcolm in the middle literally changed the face of the television comedy landscape when it premiered two decades ago, redefining what the genre could be,” added Karey Burke, president of 20th Television. “When Linwood Boomer suggested that it might be time to bring back everyone’s favorite dysfunctional family for a bit of a reunion, we couldn’t think of a more iconic and influential series to revisit, along with a truly brilliant cast to reunite with .”

News of a potential revival of Emmy-winning sitcom has been teased by both Muniz and Cranston.

In October 2022, Muniz told Fox News he “would be down, 100 percent” for a reunion that Cranston had in the works.

“When I was on MalcolmI was just so excited to work on a show,” he shared. “But also, in the same sense, when the show ended, I kind of left the business. I started doing other things. I drove race cars. I joined a band. I was on tour everywhere. I opened some businesses and I got to experience so many amazing things in my life that now at this point, I’ve been able to reflect and look back and be so grateful for the experience.”

The following year, Cranston told E! News that he would “certainly be open” to a revival.

“There was talk of the possibility of doing like a reunion movie of Malcolm in the middle” Cranston said at the time.

“We had such a great family on it, and I would definitely be open to that if there was a great idea that came up like, ‘Oh, it would be great to explore what happened to this family 20 years later’,” he continued. “I can’t believe it already is, but it would be fun to do.”
