Tony Gonzalez volunteers to pay fine for Travis Kelce in exchange for TD tribute celebration

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez is in Kansas City this week as part of Amazon Prime Video’s coverage of a Black Friday contest between the Chiefs and Raiders.

Gonzalez, who is tied with tight end Travis Kelce for the Chiefs’ all-time franchise touchdown record entering Friday, pleaded with the 35-year-old tight end to commit an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when he breaks the record.

“I’m so happy for him,” Gonzalez said Friday during Amazon’s pregame show. “He’s one of the best tight ends to ever make it on and off the field. To watch him grow, I’ve followed him since he was a rookie, and I’m not surprised.”

The Chiefs’ all-time franchise record for receiving touchdowns is 76. With the pair of Chiefs legends tied, Kelce could take sole possession of that record to go along with his records for receptions and receiving yards in Kansas City history.

When Gonzalez used to score touchdowns, his signature celebration was to dunk the ball through the goal posts. Making contact with the goalposts is now an unsportsmanlike penalty and is accompanied by a hefty fine.

“I can’t wait to see this happen,” Gonzalez said. “If he dunks it, I’ll pay that fine!”
