Say goodbye to 2024 SSI payments

Each month brings several payments to retirees, survivors, the disabled, and recipients of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, but in the last two months of the year, SSI recipients will see some changes regarding their SSI payments. According to the Social Security Administration, SSI recipients will receive three payments during the last two months of the year, as they receive January benefits in advance. The reason for this move is that the first of January falls on a holiday, and therefore the SSA will reschedule the payment date to the previous business day, which falls on December 31. If you are currently eligible for SSI payments, or if you are looking forward to applying for these benefits, you can read more about payment dates and requirements here.

SSI payments will change their normal schedule in November and December

Currently, the Social Security Administration distributes over 70 million checks to recipients of the Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs. As a result, SSA created an annual payment schedule so that all recipients are aware of the exact days they will receive their payments throughout the year. According to this Payment plan for social securitybelow are the essential conditions to determine when you will receive your benefits:

  • If you are eligible for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, you will typically receive your daily allowance on the first of each month, unless it falls on a holiday or weekend. In this case, the federal agency will reschedule the payment for the previous business day.
  • Unless it falls on a federal holiday or weekend, you will always receive your benefits on the third day of the month if you are eligible for the Retirement, Survivors and Disability Insurance (RSDI) program and you applied for benefits before May 1997.
  • If you are eligible for the RSDI program but applied for benefits after May 1997, you will be paid according to the following staggered payment schedule:
    • The second Wednesday of the month for those born between 1. and 10
    • The third Wednesday of the month for those born between 11. and 20
    • The fourth Wednesday of the month for those born between the 2nd1. and 31

Because of these circumstances, SSI recipients will receive a triple SSI payment before the end of the year, mostly because some payment dates coincide with federal holidays or weekends. For your convenience, we’ve included the complete payment plan here:

SSI payments SSI payment date Advance payment
October 1 October
November 1 November November 29 (December 1)
December December 31 (January 1)

As you can see, in the next two months, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program will receive a triple benefit payout. Two of these payments take place in November as they receive the standard payment on the first of the month; however, because December 1 falls on a weekend, SSA will reschedule this payment to the previous business day, November 29. Similarly, recipients will receive an extra SSI payment at the end of the year because January 1 is a holiday.

As a result, recipients will receive the first enhanced SSI payment in 2025 in addition to receiving one payment upfront. SSI claimants will therefore receive an average of $967 on December 31 instead of $943. Here are all the SSI payments available to these claimants in 2025, taking into account the 2.5% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA):

SSI payments Social Security check 2.5% COLA increase Extra income
On average $698 $715 $17
Individuals $943 $967 24 USD
